Does anybody know what the grey thing that looks like a baseball bat is? It is sticking out at a right angle just below the cockpit??

The "baseball bat" on the port side of the fuselage is a wind driven winch. It has a pylon on the bottom of the fuselage to guide the cable that attaches to the towed target.

The grey rounders bat shaped object is the drogue winch. This aircraft was a target-tug as shown by the yellow and black striped under surfaces.
