Ah, the Miles Martinet. Take a pretty aeroplane like the original Kestrel-engined Master and make it into one of the ugliest.
Miles M.25 Martinet TT.Mk.I
Does anybody know what the grey thing that looks like a baseball bat is? It is sticking out at a right angle just below the cockpit??
Theo, a little photoshopping of the serial number will make it harder to answer, Google is a wonderful tool;-)
The "baseball bat" on the port side of the fuselage is a wind driven winch. It has a pylon on the bottom of the fuselage to guide the cable that attaches to the towed target.
The grey rounders bat shaped object is the drogue winch. This aircraft was a target-tug as shown by the yellow and black striped under surfaces.
Thanks, of all the things I thought it might be I did not get within a mile of guessing tow hook!
