Swirling the drain..........from Rico
Residential real estate is swirling the drain.
Why? What? Huh? You might fairly ask...especially if you get your news from the media and believe a 'recovery' has started, and believe Obama-Soetoro who claimed 'we have averted a disaster' (thanks to Team Obama).
There are 140 million personal residences in the United States today.
- Zillow says 20 million owners 'plan' to sell their homes if there is any improvement in price.
- Four million existing homes are currently on the market.
- Lennar, Pulte, et al have one million new homes for sale.
- There are one million bank-owned properties.
- Eight million mortgages are late on their payments.
Not very good numbers.
Now consider that the 80 million baby boomers are retiring at a rate of 10,000 per day, many wanting or needing to downsize residences as they age.
- Assuming they are downsizing from a 2,500 square foot home to a 1,000 square foot condo, and/or a 100 square foot assisted-living facility, that is a shrinking of demand of 4.3 billion square feet per year. [Figure roughly the size of San Francisco each year.]
Think the 65 million Gen X-er's are going to pick up the slack in the market?
- I would not bet on it, not with unemployment and taxes climbing...and inflation, serious inflation, has yet to hit.
Take away = It's probably NOT a very safe investment to make right now.

Arizona and the tea parties...
I speculate if my fellow Mainers will be heading to Arizona this weekend. Do border states need to stick together?

Magic. Do you believe in..........from Rico
There was an "old" [read: classic] song entitled "Do You Believe In Magic?"
The COMEX (not for no reason called the CRIMEX by those in the business) had significant "call " options at $1200 spot price for gold expiring today.
Funny, but gold traded just below $1200 spot price (sometimes merely $0.50 below) ALL day.
Once these "call" options (the "puts" too, in fairness) expired as 'worthless' after market close, gold seems now "allowed" to trade above $1,200.
Whiskey-Tango-Foxtrot (WTF)?
Obvious. Blatant.
- Market manipulation, for you fiddy-two percenters a.k.a. Democrats (C).
There was an old (classic) B/W TV show once called "Car 54 Where Are You?" which could be re-done today entitled "CFTC Where Are You?"

Recoveryists.............from Rico
If it's OK to dismissively label people with serious questions about Obama-Soetoro's true status as "birthers" then I am going to take the position that anyone who actually has their heads so deeply into cranial-rectal defilade as to believe in the much-vaunted recovery as "recoveryists."
Sentient life forms view the "recovery" Koolaid being ladled out in massive doses by the Red Shed (White House), Congress (the Party Congress) and the Ministry of Truth (the financial and MSM) with utter disbelief.
Fear of drowning in a sea of sovereign and corporate red-ink has made this global sell-off NOT a "flight to safety" but a headlong rush into "liquidity" away from paper assets (equities and bonds), making days like this good for only two things:
- The Puma Index
- A Guinness ...or two or three.

Shaping The Battlefield
Sweet! Great Satan is fixing to turn asymmetrical warfare into an an art form anywhere the enemies of fun and free choice hang, reload and resupply:
"...Top American commander in the Middle East has ordered a broad expansion of clandestine military activity in an effort to disrupt militant groups or counter threats in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Somalia and other countries in the region.
"...Officials said the order also permits reconnaissance that could pave the way for possible military strikes in Iran if tensions over its nuclear ambitions escalate.
"...Its goals are to build networks that could “penetrate, disrupt, defeat or destroy” Al Qaeda and other militant groups, as well as to “prepare the environment” for future attacks by American military forces.
Oh Snap! Somebody best alert a certain loser lover cry baby so he can 'Rethink AFPAK" with an eye to be in it to win it.
