Iraq Update by DJ Elliott.........
Sound familiar? I seem to remember writing about this a few times over the last years...
Iraq war: why US military withdrawal might not happen in 2011
One congressman suggested Thursday that the politically acceptable size of the force that would remain in Iraq “could be 20,000.”
Top Pentagon officials said Thursday that the Iraqi government shares some of their concerns.
“There have been a number of informal conversations with the Iraqis about this,” Defense Secretary Robert Gates told the Senate Armed Services Committee.During these talks, the Iraqi government indicated that it “is very open to a continuing presence that would be larger where we could help the Iraqis for a period of time,” Mr. Gates said.
Three concerns He cited three primary areas of US concern with Iraqi military operations as the Pentagon prepares for the pullout of its troops by the year’s end:
• The Iraqi military's ability to exploit intelligence it collects
• Its capabilities with logistics and maintenance of its vehicles.
• The burgeoning Iraqi Air Force's ability to protect its own air space.
“I’m not actually concerned about the stability of the country,” Gates told the committee. “But I am concerned about their ability to address these issues in particular.”
Congress on board, probablyFor its part, Congress seems increasingly braced for the request to extend US troop presence in Iraq. “I think it's also obvious that the Iraqi military doesn't have a lot of the technological capability that they need to combat to this kind of insurgency that is still out there,” Sen. John McCain, the committee's top Republican, said in Thursday’s hearing.
On this matter, there seems to be some bipartisan consensus. In a breakfast with the Center for Media and Security earlier in the day, Rep. Adam Smith, the House Armed Services Committee’s top Democrat, said it is “highly likely” that the Iraqi government will request US troops to stay.
“I’d be very surprised” if that didn’t happen,” he added. Congressman Smith estimated that the number of US troops likely to be requested to stay in the country “is not going to be” as high as 50,000 – the current US troop level – but “could be 20,000.” He said that these US troops “could just be trainers” for the Iraqi military.
Whether Congress will back such a request “depends” on how many troops senior US defense officials request stay in the country. Congress is likely open to a number in range of 20,000 US troops, but if the Pentagon asks for as many as 50,000 troops to remain, Smith said, “We might have a problem with that.”

Spreading it around?..............from Rico
These charts are openly available, but outside the government (which surely is aware of the data) not commonly discussed or noted in the public domain.
Why? Well, LOOK at them for a minute. This is exacgtly what inflation looks like, and the conclusions that can be drawn are not only NOT good, but that "we the people" have been conned. Snookered. Hoodwinked. Sold some very expensive snake oil.
- In a word: screwed.
Take away this thought (remember Obama-Soetoro's exchange with Joe the plumber about spreading the wealth around?):
- Inflation itself IS a transfer of wealth.

Stuxnet Not What It's Cracked Up To Be............from Dan Friedman
Stuxnet rattled Iran but atom work goes on: report
(Reuters) - The Stuxnet computer worm caused relatively limited damage to Iran's nuclear program and failed to stop the Islamic republic stockpiling enriched uranium, a U.S.-based think-tank said in a report.

[Sorry folks, but there’s no cheap way out. Either someone sends a bunker buster down the chimney at Natanz or the Iranian madmen get to hold a thermonuclear gun to our heads within a few years. df]

Decoding global warming stories...........from the Daily Bayonet
A handy cut-out and keep guide to phrases frequently used in global warming news stories, and what they really mean:
“since records began” - since 1850 if using observed data, or about 1980 if using satellite data
“might, may, could, perhaps” - we can say anything is happening if we put enough modifiers in front of it
“experts say” - (a) we’re an NGO in need of funding or (b) I’m a scientist in need of funding
“science is settled” - stop asking questions, we know better than you skeptics/deniers/cranks/scary people
“consensus of scientists” - the wisdom of crowds is all we have left, so SHUT UP
“CO2 pollution” - your high school science teacher lied about CO2 being plant food
“increasing global population” - pesky developing nations are demanding cars and appliances. The horror.
“sustainable development” - subsidies now, or the planet gets it
“raising awareness” - hippies doing something daring or stupid for attention
“cooling caused by warming” – hey, you believed everything else we said, why stop now?

Obama is Pulling Ahead of Carter.............by Dan Freidman
"The U.S. has never tried so hard and failed so utterly to make and keep friends in the Third World.”
Take a stroll down memory lane with the the late, great Jeanne Kirkpatrick and see if you can recognize the striking similarities between a peanut farmer’s costly errors in 1979 and a community organizer’s costly errors today. Of course, due to inflation, contemporary errors cost us lots more than they did thirty years ago. Not even the clear-eyed Kirkpatrick ever imagined that even the worst future president would stand aside and watch Carter’s Iran obtain nuclear weapons.

Lara Logan's Sexual Assault in Egypt
If the crime is rape, expect the most obscene responses to it, from both left and right. I frankly was horrified by the story, and needed more information. But that wasn't the case for many others. See: "Reactions to Lara Logan's Sexual Assault in Egypt."

Black Veil Brides
Just saying. In certain circles - concern for a re crunk'd up Caliphate is LOL'd. The bringer upper is often regarded as being paranoid, hot for fear mongering, loving Little Satan a little too much, m"Hammedist phobic - or worse - woefully misinformed.
So what?
Regardless of any chances that a trip on the Way Back Machine will - or will not -create a redux of Ottoman like Imperial m"Hammedism, there is a very serious - secular - concern about the Ihkwan.
Especially in Egypt.
And it should be addressed repeatedly until it's common knowledge in diplopolititary discourse au courant.
One of the charming things about Ihkwan in Pyramidland is all the jazz about all the 'hospitals' and 'clinics' they fund and run.
Try and find or search something about them - it's nigh impossible to find any specifics.
It is actually mind crawlingly creepy to add that to the mix that Egypt is the world's leader in horrific gender apartheid of the most depraved control freak mentality ever devised. Indeed - little girls from all over the AO are taken to Egypt to undergo a procedure that decorum prohibits mentioning.
So, is this the work of the Ihkwan 'clinics' and 'hospitals'?
Pic - "The Brotherhood envisions the establishment of a democratic, civil state that draws on universal measures of freedom and justice, with central Islamic values serving all Egyptians regardless of colour, creed, political trend or religion"

Dear Abby.........
Dear Abby,
My husband has a long record of money problems. He runs up huge credit-card bills and at the end of the month, if I try to pay them off, he shouts at me, saying I am stealing his money. He says pay the minimum and let our kids worry about the rest, but already we can hardly keep up with the interest. Also he has been so arrogant and abusive toward our neighbors that most of them no longer speak to us. The few that do are an odd bunch, to whom he has been giving a lot of expensive gifts, running up our bills even more. Also, he has gotten religious. One week he hangs out with Catholics and the next with people who say the Pope is the Anti-Christ, and the next he's with Muslims. Finally, the last straw. He's demanding that before anyone can be in the same room with him, they must sign a loyalty oath. It's just so horribly creepy! Can you help?
Signed, Lost in DC
Dear Lost:
Stop whining, Michelle. You can divorce the jerk any time you want. The rest of us are stuck with him for two more years!
