NORFOLK (May 11, 2011) The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) departs Naval Station Norfolk for its maiden deployment. George H.W. Bush, the Navy's newest aircraft carrier, deployed as part of the George H.W. Bush Carrier Strike Group supporting maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 5th and 6th Fleet areas of responsibility. I have a lot of 'extinct' (obsolete or defunct work equally well) old paper currencies from past travels.
Prettily engraved, but absolutely worthless albeit colorful scraps of paper.
I use them mainly as bookmarks now....they ARE good for that at least.
Governments change. They come and go. Their currencies (note I do NOT say 'money' here) usually become history when they do.
Bear in mind that in human history over 4,000 paper currencies have become extinct.
Sadly, too many in my lifetime, but I have had the 'learning experience' of having seen it happen.
This comparison of the British pound, the Swiss Franc, the Canadian Dollar, and the US Dollar in terms of gold is one of the better illustrations of the death of paper fiat currencies I've seen. It's worth looking at, then thinking about.
No, they are not quite bookmark material yet, but......
