It is some time since we have visited the Red Lion at Stiffkey.
The food has always been good value, yet I recall that over a year ago the facilities were looking somewhat tired.
However, as well as the addition of a new 10 bedroom hotel overlooking the marshes, the kitchen and loos in the old building have all been refurbished.
The food is still good value with a selection of specials, including half a grilled lobster at £13.95. Ingredients are locally sourced where possible.
One of us ordered the battered cod which was beautifully cooked and of Jurassic proportions, as was the homemade burger. A seasonal dish of asparagus in butter with Parmesan shavings made for a lighter main course for the less hungry.
As you would expect in this area, there is the usual selection of real ales available and a short, but thoughtfully composed wine list, by Ferrers Le Mesurier & Son.
The Red Lion was always a good traditional Norfolk pub, yet we all agreed it has become even better than we remembered and worth another visit this summer.
