I was told by an old fellow who flew Halifaxes that they could fly lower than Lancs......because the Halifax was flush riveted

They are just damned lucky the Elders Remittance weren't at home. Ma Remittance has a particular dislike of low flying over the castle grounds, as the local microlight club have learned to their discomfort.

Low flying capability had its downside when the lower service ceiling of Halifaxes put them at greater risk from flak. It wasn't until the Mk III that the Halibags had tailfin endplates that prevented uncontrollable inverted spins, reasonable speed, height and defensive armament but bombload was always much less than the Lancaster. On the plus side, more aircrew escaped from shot down Halifaxes than Lancasters but they were more likely to be shot down. Whatever the pluses and minuses of both aircraft they were crewed by heroes.
