Richard is right-an earlier version of the Merlin served well in Spits during the Battle of Britain, but think of what a close run thing that was, what with sending good guys out in machines that required Lucas parts ! Truly, the world hung by a thread. (I know, I own an MGB...) Packard and AC Delco made this a viable option ! Whoo hoo !
Don't forget the battle-winning Miss Shilling's orifice. ( A simple adaption to the Merlin's carburettor that enabled spits and Hurris to dive after fuel-pump equipped Daimler-Benz engined Me109s without needing to half-roll to avoid negative-g fuel starvation).

Yep, the brilliant RR Merlin. Manufactured in the US by Packard and the wretched Amal and Lucas junk stripped out for real parts.

Simple in the sense of the brilliant analysis and rapid solution of a complex problem cured by the right sized hole in a penny-sized piece of metal.
