I'm sorry to admit this but for air support I would prefer the Thunderbolt II over Harrier but ideally I would have the Skyraider. It's a loiter time, payload, speed thing. You want plenty of deliverable payload, delivered accurately (lower speed) and you want the aircraft when you ask for it(quickest when it's stooging around nearby).
SKYRAIDERS rule for all mentioned reasons above! It's not like we don't always fight with air superiority, we use AC-130s safely, for chris-sake. ...Speaking of another one missing from this list...Show me a Harrier with a 105 on it.
Harrier-very sexy, and effective. But picture a Skyraider with updated avionics and weapons systems... Whoo hoo ! (Oh, and don't forget that a couple of Mig 15s bit the dust in Vietnam at the hands of Navy Skyraider crews. Explain that to the Commisar !)
A Super Tucano can carry a 1.5 ton payload. They use them for counter insurgency work in South America. Relatively cheap to operate, robust and can have plenty of them not far away from where they are needed.
A BAE Hawk might also fit the bill - 3 ton payload and we've got pilots who know how to fly them. Don't know how happy they are on rough runways though.
Yeah, but try to get the International Pilot's Union (every airforce) to agree to buy and fly slow stuff when fast jets are way more glamorous and fun to fly.

Still not enough weaponry for the endless supplies of fanatical mussies.
