I remember stretches of road like that throughout Kent, Surrey and Sussex in my boyhood but most of them fell victim to various road 'improvement' schemes. Long dark tunnels through the overhanging trees kept neatly clipped by the passage of what were then called heavy lorries, and the annual clipping carried out by local bus companies.
