Went onboard one of them at Mildenhall in either '89 or '90. I was working at RAF WYTON as an Able Seaman. Had to wear paper coveralls and nothing else. The marine on guard at the steps told a dit about a then East German who tried to scrape some flecks of paint under his fingernails so the reds could try and work out the paint formula !!
when i lived in Japan we moved (after about a year) to the airforce base...the flightline ended into the main road to the housing complex...i used to love driving to the very point where the planes would take off and feel the power they had...it was incredible
There's one of these at an air museum my brother-in-law and I go to every now and again. A beautiful piece of machinery that was decades ahead of it's time....
There was a special on the SR-71 a couple of years ago. A pilot said he had the record for the fastest flight in it. It was around noon on the day after Regan had Libia bombed. And he said that he took off from England and just after he left Italy every threat receiver lit up. So he pushed the levers wide open and left the ramjets wide open for the picture run. After they had left Libia's airspace, His system operator said I think we can slow down now. He said the mach meter was scary.

hey, the one in the center looks like it has 2 canopies?? Is that an illusion or did the Blackbird come in that configuration?
Yes, they had a trainer version with 2 canopies. Also a fighter version.
YF-12 was the fighter prototype. Goggle it for images.
