Why the different yellow and red bombs on the bomber. I am thinking yellow hit the target area, red hit the target.

Yellow bomb symbols normally indicate night raids and red are for daylight. On other aircraft red meant raids outside Germany. It was down to each pilot and ground crew how raids were marked. For example, dropping an especially large bomb would merit a bigger symbol.
The original Phantom of the Ruhr EE139 flew a total of 121 sorties with 100 and 550 squadrons. She was scrapped in February 1946.

The B-17 is painted as a 390 Bomb Group aircraft, which operated from AAF Station 153, Village of Framlingham, Suffolk.
