My father introduced one of his friends to my mother while we were standing on the dock while his ship came a longside. He used semaphore with his fingers.
As he pointed out morse is still the only reliable method of defeating electorinic jamming and we were bloody stupid to stop teaching it.
That's only about 20 words a minute. If you don't insist on being able to write it down, serious hams can do 35.
You can't write nearly as fast as you can send and receive.
