UMM!!!....

...."one of the Second World War's Better" would be more truthful. A sizable amount of the success and failures of WW II aircraft came down to General Officers and their higher ranked Officer cohorts who often mis-employed aircraft relative to the strengths and liabilities of the aircraft in question.

I'd nominate the Mosquito or B-25 or 26, for best bomber, all for different reasons, if we're talking all arounders. For any specialty, arguments an be made for a lot of them in some instances.

The only thing you'll find general agreement on as to "value" are the designs that weren't much good designs at all. But I wouldn't hazard to name a definitive "worst" bomber, either.

Cheers,

Born out of failure (twin Vulture-engined Manchester), one of the truly great fighting machines.
Even for those of us born after 1945 (1947 for moi), once heard, always remembered, once seen, never forgotten.
The Mosquito was another, so was the Mustang, but none of them will ever supplant my personal favourite - that incomparable, elliptical legend in the top-right corner of Theo's site.

Worst bomber? How about the Fairey Battle, although it was pretty dated by 1939.

Excellent! IMHO the Lancaster had the best charisma and gravitas of any WW II bomber. What's not to love about FOUR Rolls Royce Merlin engines? The only niggle would be that the B-29 was incomparable, and obviously superior both in specifications and in its contribution.

Am I to assume this ranking is based more on potential than actual accomplishment??

(...he says, while thinking of the workhorse B-17 and the show-stopping B-29...)
