Actor, World War II Veteran; officer, 7th Battalion (LI) The Parachute Regiment. On D-Day this Battalion made contact with Major Howard at the Orne Bridge now called Pegasus Bridge - portrayed his own wartime exploits in films - Sir Richard's most memorable role was that of Wing Commander Guy Gibson, VC, in The Dam Busters (1955):

Dambusters is a superb film which is traditionally shown around Christmas in England. Too bad political correctness keeps it from being shown here.
