Harry Truman left the White House and drove Bess back to her mother's house in his own car, sleeping on friends couches on the way. Should the serving POTUS get a security detail? Sure he should but the best protection is keeping his chain of succession trained so that no enemy thinks that he is irreplaceable. All he should need to worry about is the lone lunatic and that should not need a huge military operation to guard against.
