59 years later i am shooting a round quite similar to the .280 brit, called a 6.8mm remington spc.

ballistics for the 6.8mm are a nominal 2550 -- 2600 fps with 110 to 115 grain bullets, which is, i believe, quite similar to the .280, ... , actually, looking at my reference, "cartridges of the world," by frank c. barnes shows the .280 to have been flirting wiht around 2600 fps w/ 139 grain bullets.

the 6.8mm shoots a .277 caliber bullet, while the .280 british appears to have fired a true 7mm bullet, at .283" in diameter.

the 6.8mm rem spc is a fine cartridge, but the .280 british seems to have been as well, and slightly more powerful to boot.

it is too bad the british did not adopt the .280 cartridge, but america put quite a twist on her n.a.t.o. colleagues to adopt the 7.62x51mm nato round. the 7.62mm has got no flies, either, but it perhaps needlessly powerful as an infantry rifle.

p.s. oddly enough, there appears nothing totally new under the sun.
