Fatuous Statement of the Day...........

'Scrapping HMS Cumberland 'will save £60m'' by Peter Luff Junior W**ker at Defence.

Theo's Thought-

How much time/money will it cost to replace her when we suddenly have to re-arm ourselves because we discover that strong a navy is a bloody handy thing to have when all hell breaks loose.

amen!

A economy the size of Great Britain should probably have a surface fleet of at least 80 capital ships, including 2 carriers.

This is pitiful. Given that our population is 60 million we could cover the £16m running cost of one of these frigates for 25p a year per capita. I would be happy if we spent £2500 per year per capita on the military and had a 300 ship navy and an air force that could drop bombs.

The £60 million figure is an accounting metric that will include depreciation and general maintanance as well as the nominal salaries of the personnel assignhed. Unless all of these sailors are sacked and driven to Australian/NZ service, this will save nowhere near £60 million real pounds per annum.

This is folly. It is like me saying that I'm saving £3000 a year by not owning a Jaguar car!
