Rick Perry Supporter Bashes Mitt Romney's Religion

This is really loathsome stuff.

See: "Texas Evangelical Leader Robert Jeffress Attacks Mitt Romney's Mormon Church as 'Cult'."

the belief held by many evangelicals that Mormons are not Christians.

The way this is written is misleading. As it stands it implies that ONLY some evangelicals believe that Mormons are not Christians. However, the fact is that NO Christian denomination holds that Mormons are Christian. Not the Roman Catholic Church, not the Lutherans, not the Methodists, not the Presyterians, not even the Episcopalians.

This is not an extremist viewpoint. It's a mainstream Christian belief.

Here is the Roman Catholic Church ruling that Mormon baptism is not a Christian baptism (and if you're not baptized, you're not Christian) and here is their explanation as to why the differences between Mormonism and the Roman Catholic Church are of a different enough kind from those of denominations that they do recognize as Christian (Methodists, Episcopalians, Lutherans, etc.).

I was doing some double-checking. Apparently the Presbyterians may recognize Mormons as Christians, although highly erroneous. But the rest don't recognize Mormon baptism as valid and thus don't recognize Mormons as Christian.

Understand that I'm not trying to demonize Mormons any more than I'd be demonizing Muslims, Hindus or Buddhists as not being Christian. What I'm trying to do is show that this is not some wacky discriminatory belief of a few right-wing Evangelical Christians - it's mainstream Christianity.

Pot Calls Kettle "Black"
(dit, dit, dit)
In the news today - a member of a Christian Evangelical CULT claimed that the Mormon CULT is not "Christian".
-FLASH-
A cult is a cult is a cult.

Well said Ron. Virtually all Christian denonminations believe the LDS church is not a Christian church. The only "controversy" is a made up one by the MSM to try to tear down a potentially strong opponent of Obama (Perry) while putting the message that another strong opponent of Obama (Romney)is "un-Christian." I say this as a supporter of neither candidate as I support Herman Cain, but will happily vote for whomever wins the nomination as a vote against the current administration.

I do not condemn anyone for their beliefs or lack thereof, just as I hope they wouldn't condemn me for the way I VIEW their religion... Having said that I don't view LDS as a Christian faith - any religion that teaches that you become a god when you die isn't Christianity IMHO
