Rickvid, Speaking with a SEATTLE city police officer last summer, I asked that exact question and his response was that they are not in place to protect anyone, they are in place to uphold and enforce city and in some cases state and federal laws, keep order during times of crisis and to investigate, pursue, and apprehend person who break them. At no time are they charged to protect anyone, and by the way call central dispatch and see what the average response time is lately, if your call isnt "prioritized" you will have to hold off a home invader for approx 4 to 6 minutes. ask any of your local officers.
