The shrapnel that took this guy's face didn't kill him right away. It took a while before shock and blood loss did him in.
It's probably the worse way to expire. Not able to see, speak or communicate you last thoughts while in intense pain.
I had a friend who was a corpsman during the "Frozen Chosin" campaign in 1950. He was treating wounded in a warming tent because the outside temperature was about -30 degrees. A Marine staggered into the tent without a face. The cold had caused the blood to coagulate and the Marine was able to walk. My friend shouted: "Can you hear me?" The Marine nodded yes. Then my friend, with tears in his eyes, told him: "Go outside, lay down, get comfortable and go to sleep". My friend Ray knew the Marine would die, but freezing to death would be the least agonizing.
Ray passed away a number of years ago.
But I still remember clearly, when he told me the story of that incident in 1960he had tears in his eyes.
