I watched a science-ish TV show some years back when the bees where getting rare in my part of the world (Southwest US) and they, after spending 55 minutes griping about how bad humans are for this planet, finally concluded that the bees had a virus moving through their population. They are back in full force around here now and I didn't even have to send Al Gore any money to make it all better.

One reason is lawyers. Yep. The neighborhood bee keeper can be sued for huge amounts if anyone within a half mile or so if stung by a bee and has an allergic reaction. This eliminated huge numbers of bee hives. I'm thinking we won't be hearing about that particular issue though.
