the germans came to town and offered the ukranians the ability to kill russians.
10 years prior the russians tried and nearly succeeded in killing the ukranians. they called it the Holodomor which means "death by starvation"
I'm pretty sure the ukranians, this guy included, would have jumped into whatever monkey suit they offered for the chance to kill russians. and I can't say I blame him one bit.
