This makes perfect sense...profit over people!
Cigarettes, when they were only tobacco, were actually much less harmful that the modern version that added chemicals for flavor, habituation, yadda-yadda...you know the drill: the same thing that was done to natural food was first done to natural tobacco.
One thing that flew under everyone's radar was the addition of cigarette 'filters' to make them safer/healthier to smoke. [read: asbestos]
I had a beloved family member who smoked unfiltered cigarettes his entire life, but contracted cancer upon switching to 'filtered' cigarettes.
- Perfect scam: Tobacco was blamed but the asbestos in the filters was never suspected.
How many people still don't know about this?
Fuckers!

Its worth noting that cancer can take a very long time to develop before "breaking out."
If they used asbestos, it was a long time ago. Before the danger was known ... and honestly, it made sense to use something that wouldn't burn, didn't it?
What are cigarette filters made of now? A "plug" of acetate cellulose filter tow 95% of cigarette filters are made of cellulose acetate (a plastic), and the balance are made from papers and rayon.
