Arab Turmoil & The Indespensible Nation.........by Dan Friedman
It is often said Israel lives in a “dangerous neighborhood” and the Middle East is a “volatile region.” To those characterizations you can now add another adjective “chaotic.” Even the usually self-assured Wall St. Journal seems flummoxed. In an editorial today they went through the motions and criticized the Obama administration for being blindsided, but they also threw up their hands and had to admit, “The reality may be that the future of these places is not ours to influence, much less control.”
That amounts to a retreat of sorts and reinforces my contention that the Arab/Muslim world plays a game with which the American mindset is unfamiliar. Still, I’ll go out on a limb and give you a glimpse of the future. When all the dust settles, as though it was a miracle, out of nowhere Israel will appear as an oasis of stability that the West cannot live without.

'I've Asked My Government to Step Down' — Hosni Mubarak
Well, we'll get the real-life test of my thesis: "If Mubarak is Toppled?"
Updates and videos forthcoming.
2:55pm: Mubarak hangs on. New York Times has a report, "Mubarak Orders Ministers to Resign but Backs Armed Response to Egypt Protests." And at ABC News, "Egyptians Defy Curfew, President Mubarak Announces New Government but Won't Resign: U.S. Reconsiders Aid to Egypt, Secretary Clinton Mum on Hosni Mubarak's Fate." And check for BREAKING UPDATES THROUGHOUT THE NIGHT.

Uprising: Army on Streets of Egypt
Things are moving so fast it's difficult to know exactly what's happening.
This first clip, from Al Jazeera, shows protesters overcome by tear gas (at about 2:00 minutes):
And here's the scene from the Qasr al-Nil bridge near Tahrir Square in Cairo. Students push back riot police:
And from yesterday, dramatic footing of a man being shot during protests, and Vice President Biden's interview on PBS: "Protests Escalate in Egypt — U.S. Stands by in Realpolitik Mode."
More from Michelle Malkin, "Uprising in Egypt":
They’re calling it “Angry Friday.” Protesters in Egypt may have been cut off from the Internet, but information will always find a way to free itself. Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak is presiding over a violent crackdown against opponents who have joined a region-wide revolt against autocracy ...Also, at Wall Street Journal, "Egypt Deploys Military On Cairo's Streets" (via Memeorandum).
And don't miss the BREAKING COVERAGE THROUGHOUT THE EVENING.

Horrific Video of Couple Stoned to Death in Northern Afghanistan
It's disturbing. This could be upsetting to some viewers: "Taliban Stone Couple to Death for Alleged Adultery in Northern Afghanistan."
The background at Daily Mail, "Stoned to death with her lover: Horrific video of execution of girl, 19, killed by Afghan Taliban for running away from arranged marriage."

Anyone notice....from Rico
After all the sleep-inducing platitudes being read from the teleprompter last night and the following media blatherings and bloviating, I have a question for everyone. Anyone.
Did ANYONE at all "notice" that at NO point during the SOTU address was the state of the union addressed or even mentioned?
After all the hot air has cleared, no one in America has ANY idea of the state of the union thanks to Barry's glib performance (at least nothing other than the ideas we have already formed on our own by now).
The man spoke much while saying nothing.
Nothing.
I guess Pappy was right....an empty wagon does make the most noise.
