Krafty Kraft
Jonathan Gabay of Brand Forensics posted an interesting article at Business and Politics blog about the impending takeover of British chocolate manufacturer Cadbury by Kraft:
Unless there is a last minute change by January 25th, it appears that global brand giant, Kraft Foods has succeeded in a £11.9bn bid to buy one the UK’s best loved brands, Cadbury.
Kraft increased its bid from an initial offer of 771p a share back in September 2009 to 840p plus a dividend (the equivalent of 8581/2 p, including the fee). Read the rest of the article about Cadbury's

Welcome to The Vice Guide to Liberia. In this eight-part series, VBS travels to West Africa to rummage through the messy remains of a country ravaged by 14 years of civil war. Despite the United Nation’s eventual intervention, most of Liberia’s young people continue to live in abject poverty, surrounded by filth, drug addiction, and teenage prostitution. The former child soldiers who were forced into war have been left to fend for themselves, the murderous warlords who once led them in cannibalistic rampages have taken up as so-called community leaders, and new militias are lying in wait for the opportunity to reclaim their country from a government they rightly mistrust. America’s one and only foray into African colonialism is keeping a very uneasy peace indeed. In Part 1, Vice’s own Shane Smith provides a brief history lesson and some essential context for understanding what caused Liberia’s civil war and how things got so bad. Liberia was originally planned and founded as a homeland for former slaves back in 1821. But fast forward a bunch of years and a military coup and you find the First Liberian Civil War in 1989: yet another third-world regime change in which the US-backed opposition, led by Charles Taylor, overthrows a government unfriendly to US interests. Once in power, Taylor’s corrupt, dysfunctional government quickly finds itself under attack by local warlords, leading to the Second Liberian Civil War ten years later. From there things go from bad to total shit.

Ok who has got money?
WDRG - K for Kiwi Troop - remembering the LRDG the hard way is a group in Christchurch, New Zealand which operates a troop are desert fitted vehicles. As those familiar with the history of the Long Range Desert Group will be aware the majority of the first members were kiwis.
This group trundles around New Zealand schools giving kids some hands on learning of their history. As well as this they were slated for an expedition to the Sahara later this year with a service at El Alemien on ANZAC Day at which they would read the names of the New Zealanders who served in the 2nd Division related to members of the group and their supporters (I have four).
Unfortunately TVNZ has made the decision that they will not be funding the expedition this year but may next year. The group is self funding (largely from the pocket of its organiser Bernie Shapiro) and is not able to sustain its costs until next year. So for the cost of about $6,000 NZD in back rent they will have to sell off all their vehicles and abandon their operation entirely.
Bernie has nearly bankrupted himself in his efforts to keep things moving along but without a substantial injection of cash in the very near future it will all be over. Maintaining a good knowledge of our history is essential to our future, its as simple as that.

Tories are scared...slander UKIP
How can I tell? I read the Conservative blogs quite a bit and there is now a new trend of comparing UKIP to the BNP. Some go as far as to suggest something idiotic like THE ALMOST-ACCEPTABLE FACE OF THE BNP? While others like the more subtle Iain Dale are merely suggesting that they are not as libertarian as they claim because of proposed burka ban.
They want to ban the burka so now they are neo-Nazis (like the BNP)? Is this the tactic against UKIP in the next election? This is the second Tory site I can see that is slandering UKIP by calling them just a slightly more acceptable BNP. This is utter bollocks and bodes badly for the Conservative Party.
So I guess they think Sarkozy is a neo-Nazi as well since he banned the burka in France.
Its clear that Iain and Chris have no idea whatsoever about the burka. It is actually not part of Islam, but something imposted on Muslim women with the abject purpose of oppressing them. There is nothing in the Koran about the burka. I would recommend to both that they read Robert Spencer's Infidel's Guide to the Koran.
Surely helping to free British Muslim women from the oppression they suffer in their communities is in fact very libertarian.
If the Conservatives are going to paint the BNP & UKIP with the same brush and try convince people they are on in the same they are going to regret it. The British public are not that stupid. They realise one is a part of neo-Nazi thugs and the other is a party of people concerned about the cost of the UK's membership in the EU (monetary & sovereign rights).
It is clear to me that this smacks of desperation and shows that CCHQ is very worried about UKIP. As I said before I can see UKIP getting a couple of seats in Parliament, alas I think that is the case for the BNP as well.
