No,
Pearl Harbor is not ancient history. It’s part of my history and many others who
were alive at the time. I was just an infant, but the Japanese sneak attack on
our Hawaii naval base led to early memories of being on trains filled with young
soldiers, many of whom did not live to return home.
The
attack was on December 7, 1941 and a day later in a speech to Congress, Franklin
Delano Roosevelt called it a “date that will live in infamy.” War was declared
on Japan and on Germany. Four years later both enemy nations were conquered,
largely due to America’s capacity to gear up to provide everything our armed
forces needed. It was won, too, because it was a war to protect freedom from
authoritarian, anti-Democracy enemies.
A new
book, “Blinders,
Blunders, and Wars: What America and China Can Learn”, has been published by
the Rand Corporation that describes itself as a “research organization that
develops solutions to public policy challenges to make communities throughout
the world safer and more secure, health and more prosperous.” It was formed
after World War II to connect military planning with research and development
decisions. It is an independent, non-profit organization. The study looks at
eight strategic blunders.
As David
C. Gompert, the lead author of the book and senior fellow at Rand, said,
“Leaders who blunder into war tend to have unwarranted confidence in their
ability to script the future and control events. They favor information,
analysis, and advisors that confirm their beliefs over those that contradict
them. In essence, blinders cause blunders.”
While
Americans are still debating whether we should have gone to war in Iraq in 2003
or whether our troops should have been withdrawn by 2011, the cold fact of
Islamic aggression has seen President Obama reintroduce and increase our “boots
on the ground.” Enemies cannot be ignored. At best they can be “contained”
until, like the former Soviet Union, they collapse or change in some fashion.
Assuming, as our current negotiations with Iran suggest, that they do not harbor
extremely dangerous intentions can be fatal.
The
authors of the Rand study call Japan’s decision to bomb Pearl Harbor “a blunder
of the highest order.” It followed a succession of decisions the Japanese
leadership, largely military, had made to invade China and southern Indonesia in
the quest to secure the oil and raw materials it needed for its industrial
sector. They saw themselves as a people superior to others in Asia and the
world. As Herbert Feis, the author of “The Road to Pearl Harbor” wrote, “The
Japanese people came to believe that the extension of their control over this
vast region was both natural and destined.”
World
War II had its roots in the sanctions meted out to Japan and Germany after World
War I. In Japan’s case, its invasion of Manchuria in 1931 and China in 1937 put
the U.S. on guard and produced sanctions that included halting exports of scrap
iron, steel, and aviation fuel, as well as arms, ammunition, and critical raw
materials. The U.S. began to build up its naval forces as well. It was a good
decision.
The
attack on Pearl Harbor sealed Japan’s fate. “On December 7, 1941, Yamamoto,
commander of the carrier task force north of Hawaii, order the attack. Two waves
of Japanese aircraft, 353 in total, damaged all eight battleships in Pearl
Harbor. Four were sunk, two of which were raised eventually. Six of the eight
returned to service later in the war.”
“Significantly, the three U.S.
aircraft carriers were at sea on routine maneuvers. No U.S. submarines were
destroyed. A third wave of attack was not ordered by Yamamoto due to fuel
shortage; consequently, facilities such as dry docks, ammunition dumps, power
stations, and fuel storage facilities were not destroyed…Despite the tragic
losses, Pearl Harbor and most of its fleet were able to recover fairly
quickly.”
The
Japanese leaders had seriously misunderstood Americans. “America instantly took
a war footing. Six months later, at Midway, Japan sought to finish off the
American carriers. Instead, aided by code breaking and some luck, planes from
three U.S. carriers sank four of the six Japanese carriers that had struck Pearl
Harbor.”
The
arrogance and miscalculations of the Japanese leadership led to the loss of 2.3
million of their people, the firebombing of its major cities, the invasion of
Okinawa, and the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by atomic bombs.
The Rand
study has lessons for America today. “Japan saw the United States as having weak
will and capability. The U.S. military had been allowed to deteriorate over a
twenty-year period; isolationism and neutrality reflected America’s interwar
mood.”
Today,
our military is as small or smaller than it was at the beginning of World War
II. A President elected on the promise to remove our troops from Iraq and
Afghanistan is having second thoughts, but is emptying out our detention center
in Guantanamo, returning its inmates to the battlefield in the Middle
East. After six years in office, he is about to appoint his fourth Secretary of
Defense.
We have
been in a state of war with Islamic fascists since even before September 11,
2001. They have even declared themselves to be the Islamic
State.
There
have been three generations of Americans born since the attack on Pearl Harbor
in 1941 and that is time enough for many of them to either never have learned or
to have forgotten the lessons of that event. The Obama administration has done
everything in its power to deflect any anger toward the Muslim fanatics killing
people in the name of their holy war. We are constantly warned against
“Islamophobia.”
To avoid
a sneak attack, you have to know who your enemy is and why. Despite a previous
attack on the World Trade Center in 1993, we let down our guard. We cannot do
that again for a very long time to come.

Many years ago I served in the
Navy aboard nuclear submarines in America’s Cold War with the Soviet Union. The
general term “cold war”, when not specifically referring to the Cold War
between the America and the Soviets, is defined as a state of political
hostility characterized by threats, propaganda, and other measures short of
open warfare. It would take a pair of seriously dark rose-colored glasses to
not recognize the fact that America has been engaged in its own domestic cold
war for several decades. It would be foolish and very dangerous to not

Last Friday's artificial take-down of the Gold spot on the COMEX (50 tons of paper Gold was dumped on the lowest volume trading day of the entire year) is a textbook of the FED and their crony bullion banks manipulating perception.
- They were accompanied by the usual suspects in the Financial Media talking the usual smack that Gold was bad. Not least of them was the brilliant Citi analyst who said Gold was in a 'bubble' while conveniently ignoring an even bigger bubble...Citi itself. Too bad irony is completely wasted on the Keynesians and other morons.
Gold is still a hedge against fiat currency weakness and government malfeasance. It's easy to see how the weakest currency (the USD) is being artificially propped up like a bad "Weekend at Bernie's."
YTD 2014 Gold is +14.3% in JPY, +12.3% in Euros, +5.86% in GBP, and +0.4% in USD. Huh? That means the Dollar is GOOD and Gold is BAD, right? Not so fast Sparky.
The COMEX has become completely irrelevant, especially in the two major global markets India and China.
- Gold is NOT priced in USD as the clowns of MSNBC and the American FTV assert. While the COMEX may be dollar-centric, the rest of the world buys Gold in their own currencies, not in dollars. They buy it in Yen, Swiss Francs, Euros, Rupees and Yuan.

- They are trying to 'hide' the fact that something BIG is coming. When the proverbial hits the fan, it will (a) happen suddenly with little or no warning, and (b) the consequences will be "come as you are" for us.

Some years ago, I was visiting Red China. The topic of Tibet came up in conversation, and the (very brainwashed) Chinese I was with were full of sympathy for the Tibetans.
- The gist of their remarks went to the effect: "How would they live, how could they possibly manage their lives, without the great benefits of Communist Chinese culture and society? The poor backward devils. We're doing them a favor."
I've called this 'the Communist way' ever since.
- Even if you don't want their 'help' they're gonna save you from yourself anyway.
Pity the poor cowboy. How could he live, and manage his life without the great benefits of "progressive" culture and society? Poor backward devil. Imagine living 'the cowboy way' and saying what you mean, meaning what you say, and keeping your word...and expecting no less from others.

While American drivers are celebrating the huge drop in oil [read: gasoline] prices, they should be careful what they wish for.
The TBTF (too big to fail) banks that gave us the 2008 financial crisis, have since gotten larger by about one third and have become TBTJ (too big to jail)...in addition to becoming TBTB too big to bail).
And when you reward irresponsible behavior, what happens?
- Yes. Exactly. They have become more irresponsible.
The TBTF Wall Street banks have also become NOT TBTF thanks to derivatives. Especially commodity derivatives.
- Because everything goes UP, and this time it's different, these clever bankers didn't foresee the sudden $40 per bbl drop in oil prices and are on the losing side of these commodity derivative trades. The six biggest US banks hold roughly $3.9 trillion in losing derivative contracts.
There are a few commodity producers on the winning side of the derivative trade, however. Pioneer Natural Resources [ticker: PXD] for example, has options through 2016 covering two third's of their likely production, so unlike the banks they are protected

Hating Santa Claus

I receive Free Inquiry magazine monthly even
though I never subscribed to it. The magazine is read by atheists who prefer to
be called “humanists.” The Council for
Secular Humanism that publishes the magazine has “Affirmations of Humanism” that
begin with the assertion that they are “committed to the application of reason
and science to the understanding of the universe and to the solving of human
problems.”
I try to apply reason to everything I
write and the best science available if the topic involves science. The problem
is that most problems arise out of a lack of reason. Almost always, emotion is
the factor most in evidence.
Given the horrors of war, all well
documented, one might think that nations would do everything possible to avoid
it. Instead, war remains a top priority in a world where conflict exists
everywhere. Nations must arm themselves against their neighbors. Appeasement
never works. Denying the evil intentions of a nation doesn’t work. Relying on an
“international” organization, the United Nations, doesn’t work.
I don’t think I have spent a day of my
life when war or terrorism was not active somewhere in the world. Read world
history. It is one long record of wars. The only thing "reason" can tell you is
that some nations and people are just downright evil.
Atheism or humanism attracts
people who take pride in their intellect, their knowledge, and their rejection
of religions, all of which they deem to be advocating the “supernatural” because
they depend on the faithful’s belief in an omnipotent God.
Humans have done this, as best as one
can determine, since their earliest beginnings, though they tended initially to
deify mountains and other natural phenomenon. Add in a belief in unseen demons
that afflict one with disease and you have a humanity that, in many parts of the
world, exists today.
The Christian holy day of Christmas,
the birthday of Jesus, has taken on worldwide dimensions, celebrated in some
fashion by Christian and non-Christian alike.
Though not generally known, December
25 is the birthday of a former pagan god called Mithras. He was the son of the
virgin Anahita. He is described as wrapped in swaddling clothes, placed in a
manger, and attended by shepherds. Mithras was considered a great traveling
teacher and he had twelve companions or “disciples.” He performed miracles. And,
if you’re thinking that the early Christian leaders adapted these elements to
attract believers in Mithras to believe in Jesus, you’re right.
All religions except Judaism adapted
in the interest of acquiring more adherents. Judaism resisted this and remains
small in numbers even if it remains large in the minds of non-Jews who regard it
with a combination of awe and indignation.
Neither Jews, nor other
non-Christians, are about to give up an element of Christmas loved by all, Santa
Claus.
Well, not all. Ryan T. Cragun, an
atheist, a sociologist, and the author of “On the‘Evils’ of
Santa Claus” in the December edition of Free Inquiry is clearly not a fan of
Santa Claus.
He says of himself and his wife, “when
we gave religion the boot over a decade ago” they decided “that we would
continue to celebrate a completely secular Christmas.” So you can be an atheist, but you can still
celebrate a holiday devoted to the man who Christians deem the son of God? When the Cragon’s had a child they wanted to
share joy of the Christmas season with him. That’s called having it both
ways.
Cragun, however, began to see Santa
Claus as a stand-in for God. Why else does he have the power to know if you’ve
been “naughty or nice”? Why else does he have the ability to bestow or withhold
presents if a child has failed to measure up by being nice?
Cragun regards this as “a pernicious
invasion of personal space.” As an atheist he objects to the “idea that some
supernatural entity is always watching you—and in some traditions can also read
your mind. Why is this potentially abusive? Because it gives people the sense
that they are never really alone.” As
far as Cragun is concerned, Santa Claus “serves as a legitimizer of monotheism,”
the belief in a universal God of all mankind.
At this point I should “confess” (pun
intended) that I have always believed in God and, despite my intellect, my
ability to reason, and my particular faith, I think Santa Claus is one of the
great metaphorical inventions of mankind; a saintly, jolly old man who flies
around the world giving gifts to children, reminding them of the value of being
“nice.” That is how Santa reflects the
moral message of Christmas no matter what religion one practices or
not.
Among the Humanist statement of
principles is the following:
“We believe in optimism rather than
pessimism, hope rather than despair, learning in the place of dogma, truth
instead of ignorance, joy rather than guilt or sin, tolerance in the place of
fear, love instead of hatred, compassion over selfishness, beauty instead of
ugliness, and reason rather than blind faith or
irrationality.”
A lot of that seems to have been
borrowed from Judaism and Christianity, and with unseen irony Cragon says “I’m
fully in favor of a secular Christmas—let’s steal the holiday back from the
Christians who hijacked it from the Romans, from the pagans, and from
nature.”
Since we are all—old and
young—surrounded by images of Santa Claus between now and Christmas day, it’s
likely the Cragon’s little boy will make up his mind at some point that it was
fun to believe in Santa Claus and pass the tradition along to his
children.

Let Us Rise in Opposition to the Republocrat Party
Fresh on the heels of the
Republican election victory I am once again pondering America’s need for a new
political party. Part of this is due to the fact that even before taking the reins
of the new power they’ve been giving, the GOP leadership is negotiating
surrender to the Democrats, but that is something we’ve come to expect. As we
watch the slow but steady merger of the Democrat and Republican parties the
desperate need for an opposition party becomes increasingly obvious. Despite
the need however, the same obstacles that have stymied the emergence of a
viable third party remain; primarily the entirely reasonable fear that any
organization intended to compete with the GOP for voters would only result in a
permanent Democrat hold on power. The challenge is to create third party that
would draw support from both parties, something the Libertarian Party has
attempted to do with only limited success largely due, in my opinion, to the
fact that the Libertarians have embraced ideas that appeal to many in both
camps and policies that alienate just as many. There is perhaps, a better way. (continue reading)
