Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman surprised many recently by declaring that John Kerry’s proposal was the best deal Israel could get, provided that the land swaps with the purported Palestinian state be over populated areas instead of empty ones. His statement was immediately condemned by the Israeli left, which endorses the idea of Jewish population transfer (from Gaza in the past, from Judea and Samaria in the future) but abhors that idea when applied to Arabs (even though, in Lieberman’s plan, there would be no population transfers but only a redrawing of borders). And yet, the very same Left will very likely end-up canonizing Lieberman as a national hero. After all, it did just that with Ariel Sharon eight years ago, transforming him overnight from demon to angel.
